The Book of Jonah is unique among the Twelve \u201cMinor\u201d Prophets in that it consists almost entirely of narrative, the sole exception being Jonah\u2019s one verse oracle: \u201cForty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown\u201d (3:4).<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter 1 relates God\u2019s call to Jonah to go to Nineveh, the major city of the Assyrian Empire that would conquer the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE and exile its population – subsequently the \u201cTen Lost Tribes\u201d – to the East. Jonah is told by God: \u201cGo at once to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim judgment upon it; for their wickedness has come before Me\u201d (verse 2). Immediately we are told: \u201cJonah, however, started out to flee to Tarshish from the Lord\u2019s service. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. He paid the fare and went aboard to sail… \u201d (verse 3).<\/span><\/p>\n

The post-classical Midrash Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer devotes an entire chapter (10) to the story of Jonah (see also Tanhuma Vayiqra 8 and Midrash Jonah in <\/span>Bet Ha-Midrash<\/span><\/i>, ed. Jellinek). According to this retelling of the Biblical narrative, when Jonah arrived in Joppa, the ship on which he was destined to sail had already embarked two days earlier. But God brought a great tempest that caused the ship to return. When the sailors, men representing all seventy languages, told Jonah that the ship was bound for Tarshish, he immediately paid his fare and boarded the ship (see 1:3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After only one day into the voyage, God caused another great tempest that amazingly only affected the ship on which Jonah was sailing. The sailors each prayed to his own god, vowing that whichever one would save them would thereafter be the god of them all. When Jonah was discovered by the captain of the ship sleeping in the hold, he exclaimed: \u201cI am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of Heaven, who made both sea and land\u201d (1:9). Jonah then confessed to all aboard that he was fleeing from God and that he was clearly the cause of the tempest that threatened the ship. He told the sailors to cast him into the sea to restore calm, but they at first refused (1:12). The sailors tried throwing overboard whatever they could and rowing hard to reach the shore, but to no avail (1:13).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So the sailors plunged Jonah into the raging sea, but at first only up to his knees \u2013 and miraculously the sea abated. But when they pulled Jonah back up on board, the tempest began again. The same thing happened when the sailors plunged Jonah into the sea up to his neck and again pulled him aboard. Finally: \u201cthey heaved Jonah overboard, and the sea stopped raging\u201d (verse 15).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And then, as we shall see: \u201cThe Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah\u2026\u201d (2:1).<\/span><\/p>\n
