(First in the series of Torah allusions in Jonah)<\/span><\/p>\n

The book of Jonah contains multiple allusions to the book of Genesis, Exodus and Numbers, split up into the four chapters. The first chapter references Genesis, the second, Exodus, the third, Numbers and the fourth all three.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Using these allusions, the prophet is trying to convey to the people of Israel a need to return to their roots, and realize that God can be with them as He was in the past. Over the next four days, we will list these references.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chapter 1- allusions to the book of Genesis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) The city of Nineveh first appears in Genesis chapter 10. Nimrod, the son of Cush is heralded as the first warrior. He builds the city of Nineveh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) The stormy waters parallels the flood of Noah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) In verse 6, the sailors ask Jonah to get out of the belly of the ship and “call out to your god’. In Hebrew- kra el elohecha<\/em>. In Genesis 4:26: Enosh is born to Seth and the Torah tells us that when he was born “people began to call the name of God.” The Hebrew word kra<\/em>\u00a0is used there as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) When the lottery falls on Jonah the sailors ask him “(a) What is your trade? (b) From where did you come? (c) What is your land? (d) What people are you?” He answers: “I am a Hebrew” (Ivri).\u00a0 This sequence parallels our introduction to Abraham: “(a) Go for yourself from your land,(b) from your relatives, and (c) from your father’s house (d) to the land I will show you.” In Genesis 14:13, Abram is famously referred to as an “Ivri”.<\/span><\/p>\n

5) When Jonah is thrown into the water, the storm ceases. In Genesis, when Noah sends out a dove, a <\/span>yonah<\/span><\/em>, the flood is officially over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":77786,"id":77786,"title":"jon1-ark with
