Obadiah is the shortest of \u201cThe 12.\u201d First appearing in I Kings, Obadiah helped save the disciples of the prophets from the evil King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. He lived during the time of Elijah the prophet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Elijah’s influence can be seen in Obadiah’s prophecy in verse 18: “The house of Jacob will be fire, the house of Joseph flame, the house of Esau straw. They will ignite them and devour them.” This vivid image of a roaring fire tearing through dry grass is not random. As we recall, the centerpiece story of Elijah is his confrontation against the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. In that story, Elijah mocks the prophets as they are unable to conjure up a fire from Baal. Elijah, on the other hand, effortlessly summons a flame from the sky. Obadiah borrows this image of fire, which would be on the forefront of the mind of the people.<\/span><\/p>\n
