1:16 \u201c\u2018For as you drank on My holy mountain, all the nations shall drink ever more. They shall drink and babble and be as though they never had been.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u201cyou\u201d of the preceding verse is in the singular and clearly refers to Edom. This \u201cyou\u201d is plural and probably refers to the Judahites: they have drunk the poison chalice (<\/span>kos hatar\u2019eilah<\/span><\/i>–that term is elliptically implied but not mentioned) on the day Jerusalem (\u201cMy holy mountain\u201d) was destroyed, and now the turn of the nations is coming to drink that cup to its bitter dregs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
