  1. Short, but well-preserved.<\/em> The Book of Obadiah is the shortest of the all the books of Tanach, with just one chapter and 21 verses. But it is well preserved, by virtue of those who canonized and organized the books of the Bible, who created the \u201cbook\u201d of the Trei-Asar, the 12 prophets whose short books and individual prophecies go together.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. How could you?<\/em> Verses 12-14 address Edom: \u201cHow could you gaze with glee\u2026How could you gloat\u2026How could you loudly jeer \u2026. And lay hands on its wealth\u2026 How could you stand at the passes\u2026How could you betray those who fled\u2026\u201d How could you have done all that!? The cruelty is inconceivable.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Schadenfreude.<\/em> The phrase <\/span>yom eidam<\/span><\/i>, \u201cthe day of [their] disaster\u201d (which gives us the Hebrew expression <\/span>simcha l\u2019eid<\/span><\/i> – \u201chappiness at the downfall of another\u201d) appears no less than three times in verse 13. On the day of calamity and destruction, it is especially hurtful that there are those who come to see the downfall, and take satisfaction in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The evidence piles up<\/em>. Testimony to what Edom did to Judah during the destruction of Jerusalem (586 BCE) is accumulating. Add this to what we read in Ezekiel 35 and Isaiah 34. In another 176 chapters – Psalms 137 – we will hear even more.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Jacob\/Joseph, Esau and Edom<\/em>. The recurring epithet for Edom – Beit Esau, and for Israel – Beit Yaakov (House of Jacob) or Beit Yosef (House of Joseph), are echoes of the familial tensions from the days of the patriarchs and matriarch.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Tzarfat and Sefarad (France and Spain!?)<\/em>. In verse 20, we meet Tzarfat and Sefarad, but not in their current European meanings (they are the contemporary names for France and Spain in Hebrew). Tzarfat is a northern Canaanite coastal city, about 15 km south of Sidon (in present day Lebanon). Sefarad is apparently the city of Sardis in Asia Minor. When was there a Jewish exile there? Good question! The answers will help solve the riddle of the exact time period of the book of Obadiah.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Chazak!<\/em> That was quick – yesterday was Amos and tomorrow Jonah.
