On Passover and Pentecost\u00a0 in the thanksgiving section of the grace after meals we simply add the line &#8220;May the All-merciful let us inherit the day which is altogether good.&#8221; However, on Sukkot we also add the line &#8220;May the All-merciful raise up for us the fallen booth (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sukkah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of David.&#8221; This line comes from the 9th chapter of Amos, verse 11: &#8221; On that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is the Temple called the booth of David? What is the connection between Sukkot and the return of the kingdom of David and the rebuilding of the Temple?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Passover may get all the hype as the holiday celebrating freedom from slavery, and one where most Jews gather with family and friends for the seder, these events happen inside the home. Passover is very much a holiday about the Jewish people for the Jewish people. Sukkot is not celebrated indoors. Every fall, with a chill in the air, we set up a booth outside our homes. Anyone who walks by can see this outward symbol of the Jewish people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Torah reading on Sukkot is about the dedication of the Tabernacle with a series of sacrifices symbolically referencing the nations of the world. As Solomon prays in I Kings 8:41-43, God should hear the prayer of the foreigner who prays at the Temple. That is what Amos says will be rebuilt.
