And I will slay the last of them with the sword; not one of them shall escape, and not one of them shall survive.\u201d Eliezer of Beaugency explained, concisely, that \u201cevery protrusion of a tool or an edifice is called a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kaftor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (knob?); the question is what was bulging on what to cause what to quake?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi\u2019s interpretation that: \u201cthe <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kaftor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is atop the roof,\u201d seems to be at the heart of the JPS translation, \u201ccapitals,\u201d although one is hard-pressed to see how striking the top of a column would cause the threshold to quake. Kara placed the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kaftor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cin the middle of the roof, which could eliminate some of the problem, and Eliezer of Beaugency situated it along the columns themselves and would have the lintel quaking rather than the threshold. Ibn Ezra appeared to have understood it similarly, saying: \u201cIt is customary to place a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kaftor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> above an entrance, shaped like an apple, on which the doorposts rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak summed up the latter interpretation neatly:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Sipim<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are the two doorposts (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezuzot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of the gateway, and the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kaftor<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the lintel above them. It is so-called because it is decorated with knobs and flowers. He instructed him to strike the knob, and from that blow the doorposts would shake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This interpretation would seem to be behind the King James version of the Bible, which translated this phrase as: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Amos prophesied \u201ctwo years before the earthquake\u201d (1:1), which, as we noted there, was traditionally understood as a reference to the earthquake that greeted King Uzziah of Judah when he attempted to offer incense in the Temple, it is most noteworthy that the description of that event recorded by Amos\u2019s contemporary Isaiah reported that \u201cthe doorposts shook\u201d
