This phrase, \u201cthe fallen booth of David\u201d appears nowhere else in Tanakh. What could it mean?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medieval commentators Rashi and Radak both understand this to refer to the kingdom of David, as in, the continuation of the Davidic dynasty. Radak writes: \u201csince he said the kingdom of Ephraim would be nullified, he says that the kingdom of David will be reinstated. And the \u2018booth\u2019 is a parable, for it protects the nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this understanding of the verse, the prophecy of hope we described does not seem to be aimed at an Israelite audience, but rather at Judean listeners. Modern Bible scholars tend to date this prophecy to a post-monarchic period, when both the northern and southern kingdoms had already been destroyed and the Davidic dynasty was no longer in power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, as readers of the Bible, we are more familiar with the expression \u201cHouse of David\u201d to refer to the Davidic dynasty. If the prophet wanted to communicate the reestablishment of the Davidic dynasty, why not use the more common phrase?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the \u2018booth\u2019 instead of \u2018house\u2019 metaphor is the key to providing hope in this prophecy. Indeed, the House of David no longer rules, and yet this verse claims the metaphorical \u2018house\u2019 has not completely been destroyed (even though the physical \u2018house\u2019 i.e. Temple has been). There is still a booth that for the time being preserves a vestige of the once great dynastic structure. This booth is temporary, as the exile is temporary, but \u201cin that day\u201d of redemption it will be rebuilt \u201cas in the days of old.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though not directly related to the holiday of Sukkot, or Festival of Booths, this phrase \u201cthe fallen booth of David\u201d is used in the special insert for the holiday in the Grace after Meals. Perhaps the greater connection, beyond the use of the word \u2018booth,\u2019 is that the phrase invokes a feeling of hope for future stability in times of insecurity. Just as the Israelites\u2019 booth-dwelling journey in the desert for forty years was characterized by the unknown, and by faith that they would reach stability in the land of Israel, so too the Judean exiles were encouraged to have faith in a period of uncertainty that their \u2018fallen booth\u2019 would be rebuilt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, when we say those words, they inspire similar comfort for us, arousing hope for strength and protection in uncertain times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":77649,"id":77649,"title":"amos9-house
