Verse 11 of this chapter marks the beginning of the end of the Book of Amos, continuing through Chapter 9, and comprises five subdivisions: the disappearance of prophecy and nullification of idolatry (8:11-14), the destruction of the Temple (9:1-4), praise to God (9:5-6), destruction of the monarchy (9:7-12), and the promise of future restoration (9:12-15).

The disappearance of prophecy harks back to the outstanding portion of Chapter 7, vs. 10-17, during which Amaziah had cautioned Amos, “Do not prophesy to Israel and do not lecture the House of Isaac” (7:15). Now, the prophet retorted by saying that the days will come when there will be a hunger and thirst in the land “to hear the words of the Lord” (11). However, as much as “the people will wander from sea to sea and from north to east” in search of it, “they will not find it” (12).

The term “send (vehishlachti)” (11) used to forecast the hunger and thirst is notable linguistically. Ordinarily, the verb sh-l-ch, to send, is used in the Pi`el (shilachti); the use of the Hiph`il form occurs only two other times in Tanakh: once to predict a horde of wild animals (Leviticus 26:42) and once to portend another famine (Ezekiel 14:13). The (metaphorical) use of famine and thirst are consistent with the equation of the word of God to food (Jeremiah 15:16) and to refreshing drink (Deut. 32:2).

Assuming that the intention of v.12 is to indicate that the people will go futilely in all directions seeking the word of God, and yet only north and east are mentioned explicitly, would suggest that “from sea to sea” implies the remaining two cardinal directions, south and west. It calls to mind one of the earliest delineations of the boundaries of the Land of Israel as extending “from the Sea of Reeds to the Sea of the Philistines” (Exodus 23:31), which are situated in those two directions.

Image: Michael Ben Hamu

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/amos8-super.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":683,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/amos8-super.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":683
A Famine -
