  1. Institutionalized injustice.<\/em> Widespread deception in weights and measures hints at a rotten system: \u201cwe could offer wheat for sale, using an ephah that is too small, and a shekel that is too big, tilting a dishonest scale\u201d (verse 5).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The poor for the price of shoes<\/em>. Selling the poor into slavery for minor debts, sums as small as the price of shoes, was part of Amos\u2019s first indictment of the people in chapter 2. Verse 6 returns to this accusation regarding the prevalence of slavery in the kingdom.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. The soundtrack of the destruction<\/em>. You can find it in verse 3: \u201cAnd the singing women of the palace shall howl on that day\u2014declares my Lord GOD: So many corpses Left lying everywhere! Hush!\u201d\u00a0 – The singing becomes a keening howl, that becomes the silence of grief.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. From admonition to aspiration<\/em>. The searching and the spiritual thirst \u201cto hear the words of the LORD (verses 11-12) was, according to the context, part of the punishment. But in subsequent generations, the awakening of spiritual searching has been seen as good news, and the beginning of repentance, and <\/span>tikkun<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Wonky compass<\/em>. In the orienteering of the search for the divine word, there\u2019s a bit of a problem. The hunt goes on \u201cfrom sea to sea\u201d (west, the Mediterranean, and east, the Dead Sea) and from \u201cnorth to east\u201d (verse 12). What happened to south? Is it perhaps because to the south of the Northern Kingodm lies Judah, which is Amos\u2019s home, and there one can find God\u2019s word?<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. The 4th Temple<\/em>. In previous chapters, we heard about the temple at Beit El, at Gilgal and at Beer Sheva. In verse 14, we read about a temple at Dan, and the fate of those who swear by it: \u201cSaying, \u201cAs your god lives, Dan.\u201d 228 chapters ago (I Kings 12) we read how Jeroboam son of Nevat founded the kingdom of Israel, and put up a golden calf at Dan. And 299 chapters ago, Judges 18-19, presents a sharp polemic regarding the temple at Dan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
