Who would voluntarily lie down on a hard ivory bed? No one. Indeed, Targum resolved the dilemma by rendering it as \u201cbeds overlaid with ivory (literally: elephants\u2019 teeth),\u201d which is how he treated \u201chouses of ivory\u201d earlier in 3:15 (see, also, 1 Kings 22:39).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the exegetes differed sharply with regard to the interpretation of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seruchim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The JPS translation\u2019s rendition of \u201clolling\u201d is consistent with Rashi, who wrote: \u201cthey stretch out and sprawl themselves on their beds,\u201d quite the word picture of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gefen sorachat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ezekiel 17:6), which describes a vine that trails along the ground. Rashi also added a rabbinic interpretation (elaborated on by Malbim) that took it from the homonymous root <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s-r-ch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to be putrid, in condemnation of their proclivity towards wife-swapping. Ibn Ezra (followed closely by Radak) chose a different tack, relating it to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning fabric (see Exodus 26:12), explaining that they would cover their beds with expensive and excessively large bolts of cloth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the meaning, the prophet warns\u2014in v.7\u2014that: \u201cAssuredly, right soon they shall head the column of exiles; they shall loll no more at festive meals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image:
