  1. Ivory beds<\/em>. Furniture decorated in ivory were all the rage with the one-percenters in Samaria and in the entire ancient Near East. Remnants of these have been found in archaeological excavations in Samaria, and they are still quite impressive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Just like David<\/em>. \u201cThey hum snatches of song To the tune of the lute\u2014 They account themselves musicians like David\u201d (verse 5). What\u2019s the connection with David – the instrument? The melody? The self-image? All these, and more, in the commentaries.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Peeking inside a house of death<\/em>. Verses 9-10 tell of what might happen in one of the houses in Samaria. There is a terrible plague of death in the house. And the conversation between the \u201ckinsman\u201d and the poor soul inside the house is spine-chilling.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Border ahead<\/em>! Verse 14 tells of the damage that the punishing nation will do to the kingdom of Israel. \u201cBut I, O House of Israel, Will raise up a nation against you \u2014declares the LORD, the God of Hosts\u2014 Who will harass you from Lebo-Hamath To the Wadi Arabah.\u201d This description fits well with the expansion of the national boundaries in the days of Jeroboam II, as described in Kings II (ch. 14:25): \u201cIt was he who restored the territory of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the sea of the Arabah, in accordance with the promise that the LORD, the God of Israel, had made.\u201d If the level of success was the problem, the catastrophe will come and even out the situation.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The sin of pridefulness<\/em>. Amos presents in his prophecies the situation in Samaria, and points out the psychological roots. This understanding allows him to to see that in a period of relative calm and flourishing, the deep cracks in the foundations of the society. Cracks which will lead to its destruction: \u201cEven giant rocks break, I\u2019m telling you, and not because of old age\u2026 They never move from their spot and so the cracks remain hidden \/ It\u2019s a sort of pride\u2026 I told you, when rocks break, it\u2019s a surprise. And people, even more so.\u201d (Israeli poet, Dahlia Ravikovitch, \u201cPride,\u201d from The Third Book<\/em>, 1970.
