Just as Eskimos are said to have many words for snow, farmers who regularly faced plagues of locusts knew their different varieties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chapter 2, the prophet continued with his description of the impending desolation, comparing the swarms of locusts to a vast approaching army (see the use of the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chayil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201carmy,\u201d in vs. 11 and 25), dense enough to block the sunlight (10).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What remedy did he prescribe? Two recommendations repeat themselves in the opening chapters: fasting and assembling.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSolemnize (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kadeshu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) a fast, proclaim an assembly; gather the elders\u2014all the inhabitants of the land\u2014 in the House of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD\u201d (1:14).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYet even now\u2014says the LORD\u2014 turn back to Me with all your hearts, and with fasting, weeping, and lamenting\u201d (2:12).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBlow a horn in Zion, solemnize (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kadeshu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) a fast, proclaim an assembly!\u201d (2:15)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kadeshu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (translated here as \u201csolemnize\u201d) in conjunction with declaring a fast day requires elaboration. Strictly speaking, the root <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k-d-sh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signifies \u2018sanctity\u2019 or \u2018holiness.\u2019 Its rabbinic definition (as cited by Rashi on Leviticus 19:2, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kedoshim tih\u2019yu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is to be separate (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perushim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which justifies \u2018solemnize\u2019 (i.e., specify, formalize). However, if we harken back to Exodus 19 and the preparations for the Revelation of the Law at Mt. Sinai, we see a somewhat different meaning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, God instructed Moses to \u201csanctify\u201d the people (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vekidashtam<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for two days prior to the revelation, to ensure that they laundered their clothes, and to prohibit cohabitation. In other words, they were to purify themselves, thereby elevating the status of their personal and national sanctity. The physical purging associated with fast days is likewise a means of purification and spiritual elevation worthy of being designated a form of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kedushah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight:
