One spring, trees didn’t grow leaves.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Grass didn’t sprout.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Flowers didn’t blossom.<\/span><\/p>\n

One summer, no butterflies came.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Nor did any bird arrive<\/span>
\n<\/span>Except for a hoopoe<\/span>
\n<\/span>That King Solomon had conversed with.<\/span><\/p>\n

For King Solomon, wise enough <\/span>
\n<\/span>To write three thousand parables,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Had learned to speak the language of the birds, <\/span>
\n<\/span>And ordered a golden cage for the hoopoe, queen of the birds,<\/span>
\n<\/span>To be built in his royal gardens.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Solomon the hoopoe learned the wisdom of the Jews.<\/span>
\n<\/span>And after the king’s death, she would listen to the teachings of the sages<\/span>
\n<\/span>As she perched on branches outside their open windows.<\/span>
\n<\/span>She escorted Elijah <\/span>
\n<\/span>When the prophet ascended to heaven on a chariot of fire,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Then glided down to console the ravens<\/span>
\n<\/span>Crying for bread<\/span>
\n<\/span>Now that Elijah could no longer feed them.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of summer,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The hoopoe alone remained with us,<\/span>
\n<\/span>An olive-leaf in her beak,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A reminder of Ararat.<\/span><\/p>\n

If only the hoopoe could fly back to Elijah <\/span>
\n<\/span>And ask him to return;<\/span>
\n<\/span>The hearts of the fathers are now turning to their sons,<\/span>
\n<\/span>The hearts of the sons are turning to their fathers,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Like eggs in a hoopoe’s nest<\/span>
\n<\/span>Waiting to
