  1. Dialogue is of the essence<\/em>. The prophecy is structured as a dialogue between the people and their God. This isn\u2019t just a literary conceit, it is the heart of the matter. After a long and difficult history of being cut off, the speech and mutual interaction are the keys to intimacy and repentance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Important protocol.<\/em> How does one repent, \u201cdo <\/span>teshuvah\u201d<\/span><\/i>? This chapter is the basis for the \u201cteshuvah protocol\u201d that Rambam formulates in his Laws of Teshuvah, which include: ceasing to sin, committing to not sinning in the future, regret, confession, and avoiding repeating the sin (see <\/span>Hilchot Teschuvah, 2:2<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Shabbat (t)shuva<\/em>. The prophecy calls the listener to repentance (<\/span>teshuvah<\/span><\/i>), and promises an opportunity for love, and is read in synagogues as the haftarah on the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the height of the ten days of <\/span>teshuvah<\/span><\/i>, repentance.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Have a word, not a cow.<\/em> The phrase \u201cInstead of bulls we will pay [The offering of] our lips\u201d (verse 3) has been interpreted to mean that prayer, the service of the heart, replaces the bulls, the service of sacrifice.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. The blessing of dew<\/em>. Twice previously in Hosea (chs. 6 and 13), \u201cdew\u201d was a negative image for superficial or unserious behavior by the people. Verse 6 here redeems that image, and the situation, seeing dew as a positive blessing: \u201cI will be to Israel like dew; He shall blossom like the lily, He shall strike root like a Lebanon tree.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Chazak<\/em> – May we be strong and strengthened.
