Verses 4-11 work on an ABCBA structure, invoking (A) an historical allusion followed by (B) an admonishment then followed by (C) a punishment then back to an (B) admonishment then (C) an historical allusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verse 4, Hosea paraphrases the first of the Ten Commandments \u201cI am the LORD your God since the land of Egypt, and you should not have known any gods besides me\u201d the prophet calls out. The northern tribes have not even been able to follow the very first commandment. Hosea continues this allusion in verse 5 by referencing the Israelite wanderings through the wilderness, and how God was with them at that time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He then shifts to admonishing the people in verse 6 for becoming complacent when they entered the land. When the people needed God in the wilderness they were close to him, but now peacefully in their land they forgot him. As a punishment, in verses 7-8 God will turn this seemingly peaceful land against them unleashing the lions, and leopards, and bears (oh my!) against the people. Hosea then switches to the admonishment in verse 9- the people have brought this on themselves. They rebelled against God. Finally in verse 10 and 11, God alludes to the beginning of the Israelite time in the land of Israel, when they cried out for a king against the wishes of God and the prophet Samuel. \u201cWhere is this king that you wanted? He will not be able to save you,\u201d the prophet warns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These 8 verses fit together creating a whirlwind knockout by the prophet, throwing the reader back and forth as a way of emphasizing the
