In chapters 9 and 10, Hosea mentioned the idolatry of Ba’al Pe’or from Numbers, and the rape of the concubine in Gibeah at the end of the book of Judges. In chapter 12 and 13, Hosea draws heavily from the book of Genesis to castigate the people, specifically the life of the patriarch Jacob.

The chapter revolves around a single theme – faithfulness. The rebuke centers on Ephraim’s unfaithfulness to God (which is contrasted with Judah’s faithfulness). The reproach over the northern kingdom’s idolatry is not due to the licentious behavior that accompanied ancient idolatry, but to the northern kingdom’s lack of fidelity and their display of ingratitude towards God.

The claim is not that Judah is perfect, indeed, Hosea notes that “according to his deeds He shall recompense him.” However, Ephraim “tends the wind And pursues the gale; He is forever adding Illusion to calamity. Now they make a covenant with Assyria, Now oil is carried to Egypt” (verse 2). Wind lacks permanence – chasing after it has no lasting value. Hosea demonstrates that Ephraim’s lack of faithfulness and constancy to God is reflected in their political alignments as well. When the people think that a pact with Assyria will be beneficial, they support them; if Egypt’s offer is more tempting, they abandon Assyria in favor of Egypt. In Rabbi Mosheh Lichtenstein’s formulation, they prefer “short-term utilitarianism over long-term commitment”.

Hosea contrasts their flightiness with the constancy and fidelity demonstrated by Jacob in Aram. This quality finds expression from the very beginning, when he falls in love with Rachel and asks to marry her, despite all the difficulties he faced. He is forced to wait seven years, engaged in servitude to Laban, all because of his great love for Rachel. The second part of verse 13 first emphasizes Jacob’s personal fidelity (“And Israel served for a wife”), then implies that Laban deceived Jacob and gave him Leah as a wife and forces him to engage in an additional seven years of hard labor. That Jacob is willing to work even more for Rachel, despite the uncertainty of ever acquiring her as his wife, demonstrates exceptional loyalty and fidelity, as the end of the verse states, “And for a wife he kept [sheep/faith].”

Hosea then parallels Jacob’s faithfulness and God’s faithfulness to His people: “And by a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet was he preserved” In both cases, a long-term relationship is created despite the difficulties that arise from the commitment made to the mate (Rachel/the Jewish people).

Despite these examples, Ephraim cannot stay faithful nor honest, always searching for short-term gain and expediency as opposed to long-term commitments – “A trafficker who has deceitful scales in his hand; he loves to oppress” (verse 8).

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos12-love-locks.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":863,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/hos12-love-locks.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1079
But Ephraim?
