Having mentioned that \u201cthe Lord once indicted Judah and punished Jacob for his conduct\u201d (3), he engaged in a homily (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">midrash<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on several verses in Genesis that speak about Jacob and his relationship with God.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, he expounded on the circumstances of the birth of Jacob and his twin, Esau, saying: \u201cIn the womb he tried to supplant (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">akav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his brother; grown to manhood, he strove with a divine being. He strove (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayasar<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with an angel and prevailed\u2026 At Bethel [Jacob] would meet him, there to commune with him\u201d (4-5). This is clearly a homiletical adaptation of, first, Genesis 25:26: \u201cThen his brother emerged holding on to the heel (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">akev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of Esau,\u201d and, subsequently, Genesis 32:25 ff, particularly: \u201cYour name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sarita<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with beings divine\u201d (32:29). Note the prominence given to the verbal root <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">`-K-V<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which produces the proper noun Jacob (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ya`akov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and S-R-H, which yields the name Israel (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yisrael<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the two names by which the third patriarch was known.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak attached great significance to this reprise, casting it in terms of the historiosophical idea that parental actions influence their descendants\u2014a concept best known in its later formulation by Ramban as: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma`aseh avot, siman labanim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cthe deeds of the parents are a sign, or portent, for the children\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was a great wonder, because a fetus in the womb has neither the strength nor ability in his limbs, let alone to pierce the placenta and seize the heel of a second fetus. This is indeed wondrous, and [God] enabled it for it to be a sign for his descendants that ultimately the sons of Jacob will rule over the sons of Esau\u2026 to wit: \u201cThe House of Jacob will be a fire, the House of Joseph [Ephraim] will be a flame, and the House of Esau will be as straw; they will ignite them and consume them and there will be no survivors of the House of Esau\u201d (Obadiah 1:18). And yet [Jacob\u2019s] descendants paid this no heed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A third textual allusion, to God\u2019s address to Jacob in Bethel (35:6 ff.), is interpreted by Malbim as portending yet another historical act: Jeroboam\u2019s placement of the two golden calves. While situating one in Dan, Malbim explained, is consistent with that site having already been occupied by Micah\u2019s idol (Judges 18), why was the other located in Bethel? His answer:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ten tribes identified themselves with Jacob and tried to imitate him. So when Jeroboam plotted to sanctify places that would be as sacred to Israel as Jerusalem, he considered the ways of the patriarch Jacob who overcame an angel at Penuel [which Jeroboam rebuilt along with Shechem]\u2026 and Bethel, where God appeared to him.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":76545,"id":76545,"title":"hos12-parents
