  1. And his name in Israel shall be – Jacob\/Ya\u2019akov<\/em>. The meaning of the name Jacob\/ Ya\u2019akov is connected to several stories. In the story of his birth, 487 chapters ago (Gen. 25:26), his name is connected to how he followed his twin brother out of the womb: \u201chis brother emerged, holding on to the heel (\u2018akev<\/em>) of Esau.\u201d Later, after the theft of the blessing, Esau connects his name to the act of deceit: \u201c[Esau] said, \u201cWas he, then, named Jacob that he might supplant me (ya\u2019akveni<\/em>) these two times? First he took away my birthright and now he has taken away my blessing!\u201d (Gen. 27:36). Hosea combines the two stories here, and moves the deceit all the way back to the womb. But it is encouraging to note that Jacob received a \u201cstraighter\u201d name (straight = yashar<\/em> – \u05d9\u05e9\u05e8) – Israel\/Yisrael<\/em>\/\u05d9\u05e9\u05e8\u05d0\u05dc – 480 chapters ago, in Gen. 32.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Criticism or compliment<\/em>? One can read the traditions brought here about Jacob as connected to criticism of his descendants. But if we read it on its own, it also has a positive message. See, e.g., the striving with the angel, and speaking with God: \u201cHe strove with an angel and prevailed\u2014 The other had to weep and implore him. At Bethel [Jacob] would meet him, There to commune with him\u201d (verse 5).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Bethel<\/em>. The Temple at Bethel is THE temple for the kingdom of Israel.
