{"id":76483,"date":"2020-06-25T14:05:28","date_gmt":"2020-06-25T11:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/?p=76483"},"modified":"2020-06-26T15:58:08","modified_gmt":"2020-06-26T12:58:08","slug":"fly-high-with-el-al","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.929.org.il\/en\/fly-high-with-el-al\/","title":{"rendered":"Fly High With El Al"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-content\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[281],"tags":[],"acf":{"old_id":"76483","type":"no","iframe":"","writer":34243,"related_cahpter":"511","type_929":"2","show_author_image":false,"old_create_date":"","old_url":"","post_main_content":{"description":"And approach the most high...\r\n\r\n","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the noteworthy items in this chapter appears in v. 7: \u201cFor My people persists in its defection from Me; when it is summoned upward, it does not rise at all.\u201d Indistinguishable in its English translation is the Hebrew phrase \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el `al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d rendered here as \u201cupward.\u201d Hence, the name of Israel\u2019s national airline, El Al.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is interesting to see how this phrase was interpreted before the advent of flight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi (followed by Kara) wrote:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To that to which the prophets all summoned them My people did not ascend, neither did they deign to perform it. Some interpret <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as beset by severe afflictions, with <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resembling \u201chave the power\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This is not so because it is vocalized differently. [Targum] Yonatan translated it as \u201csevere affliction\u201d also treating <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as severity, but it appears to me that I have interpreted it properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra\u2019s interpretation is reminiscent of our own translation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El `al <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is like \u201cThus spoke the man who was raised high (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">al<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">),\u201d which is an adjective like \u201csupreme\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elyon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The meaning is: the ones calling, being God\u2019s prophets, will call them to the most high, while they, uniformly, will refuse to raise their heads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was followed in this respect by Radak who said, succinctly: \u201cThe prophets call him regularly to return to the blessed most-high God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim again took an idiosyncratic view, regarding the subject of the verse as Israel and its God:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The essence of the verse is that all Israel together will call [to God] and ask Him not to elevate His presence upwards, that is above the heavenly heights, and disappear from them completely\u2026 [The prophet] described that in a time of trouble, when God wishes to return to His place, they will beseech Him not to distance Himself from them, but to remain available to save them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra\u2019s interpretation appears to be more in sync with the context than Malbim\u2019s, as v.2 of this chapter, which also features the term \u201csummons,\u201d is clearly speaking of the prophets, and 7:16, which utilizes both \u201creturn\u201d and \u201cabove,\u201d is speaking of the people\u2019s proximity to God, not vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
