God claimed that he would deal with Ephraim and Judah in the manner that a lion treats its prey. How would Hosea&#8217;s listeners respond to his rebuke? In chapter 6, Hosea tells us their answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chapter begins with the people&#8217;s speech: &#8220;\u201cCome, let us turn back to the LORD: He attacked, and He can heal us; He wounded, and He can bind us up.&#8221;. Apparently, they have taken Hosea&#8217;s message to heart. Not only do they acknowledge their guilt and that He is the sources of their tribulations, they answer Hosea&#8217;s previous claim (4:1, 4:6, 5;4) that the land lacks knowledge of God by declaring &#8220;And let us know, let us strive to know the Lord: like the dawn whose going forth is sure, and He will come to us like rain, like the latter rain which satisfies the earth.&#8221; Surely God will lovingly welcome His people back!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosea quickly supplies God&#8217;s disappointing response. &#8220;What shall I do for you, Ephraim? What shall I do for you, Judah? For your loving-kindness is like a morning cloud and like the dew that passes away early.&#8221; The commentator Malbim states that what Hosea is suggesting is that just like the morning cloud contains no rain, as whatever moisture that reaches the ground will dry up in the heat of the day, so too God is not fooled by the people&#8217;s response \u2013 even if it is sincere, the change is not lasting enough or permanent enough to be meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the main crux of Hosea&#8217;s argument is found in verse 6: \u201cFor I desire loving-kindness, and not sacrifices, and knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these words, Hosea joins a long list of prophets who castigate the Jewish people for their reliance on sacrifices as opposed to making fundamental changes in their behavior. However, the rabbis found a message of optimism in Hosea&#8217;s words:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai was once walking with his disciple, Rabbi Joshua, near Jerusalem after the destruction of the Holy Temple. Rabbi Joshua looked at the Temple ruins and said, \u201cAlas for us the place which atoned for the sins of the people Israel lies in ruins.\u201d Then Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai spoke to him these words of comfort, saying, \u201cDo not grieve, my son.\u00a0 There is another way of gaining atonement even though the Temple is destroyed.\u00a0 We must now gain atonement through deeds of lovingkindness.\u201d\u00a0 As it is written in the words of the prophet Hosea, \u201cFor I desire loving-kindness, and not sacrifices (6:6)\u201d\u00a0 (Avot de Rabbi Natan, ch.
