Like daybreak His emergence is sure, and He will come to us like rain, like the latter rain He will shower the earth.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As often happens in the Bible, there is a pun hiding close to the surface. God\u2019s instruction to humankind (the word translated as \u201cshower\u201d also means \u201cinstruct\u201d) is life-giving, like the rain. But the verb for \u201cteach\u201d or \u201cinstruct,\u201d <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yoreh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is also a homonym of the noun that means \u201cformer rain,\u201d often paired with <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malqosh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201clatter rain.\u201d One should also note that in these two lines God is compared first to the sun, then to the rain&#8211;both giving life to earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
