Attend, O House of Israel, and give ear, O royal house! For right conduct [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha-mishpat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] is your responsibility!\u201d (Hosea 5:1). This verse served as the basis for a provocative synagogue sermon preserved in Bereshit Rabbah 80:1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yosi the Maonian preached in the Synagogue of the Maonians [Maon was a village of priests near Tiberias, the city in which the Sanhedrin was located at the time]: \u201cHear this, O priests! Attend, O House of Israel, and give ear, O royal house! For right conduct is your responsibility!\u201d (Hosea 5:1). In the future, the Holy One, blessed be He, will judge the priests harshly for not having labored in Torah, saying to them: \u201cHear this, O Priests!\u201d Did you not receive from My children the twenty-four priestly gifts?! And the priests will reply: The people [of Israel] gave us nothing. Then He will turn to Israel and say: \u201cAttend, O House of Israel\u201d. Why did you not give the priests the twenty-four priestly gifts which I commanded in the Torah?! (see Numbers 18:8-19). And they will reply: Because the House of the Nasi has taken everything. [The Nasi was regarded by both the Jews and the Roman authorities as a kind of royal authority]. \u201cAnd give ear, O royal house! For right conduct is your responsibility\u201d. For it says: \u201cThis shall be the right conduct of the priests [concerning the prescribed gifts given to the priests by the people]\u201d (Deuteronomy 18:3). For this reason, divine justice turns upon you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Rabbi Yehudah Nesiyah [3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rd<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century head of the Sanhedrin] heard report of this sermon, he became angry. His counselor, Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish, said to him: We should be grateful to the Roman rulers for showing us the way in at least one thing. They have clowns and jesters in their theatres and circuses who sometimes poke fun at the rulers, the effect of which is to discharge the anger and dissatisfaction of the people in laughter, instead of their sitting around and grumbling bitterly. And what Yosi the Maonian did was just to interpret a verse of Torah, so why should you be so angry at him?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Yehudah said: Bring him to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Yosi arrived, the Nasi asked him: How would you interpret the saying: \u201cLike mother, like daughter\u201d? (Ezekiel 16:44). Yosi replied: This means, as the daughter, so is the mother &#8212; the people are like the Nasi of their generation! As the people say: &#8220;from the garden, you can tell about the gardener&#8221;. Rabbi Shimon looked at Yosi and said: So far, I haven&#8217;t even managed to assuage Rabbi Yehudah&#8217;s anger at your first insulting remarks about the House of the Nasi. But here you are, already insulting him again personally; and this time to his
