  1. Historic moment.<\/em> What\u2019s going on during this period. There are those who believe that Hosea is prophesying in Israel in the final years of the reign of Jeroboam II, until the exile of the residents of the Galilee and Trans-Jordan by the Assyrian king Tiglat Pileser in the years 733-32 BCE, and perhaps even until the destruction of Samaria. It is a time of anarchy, internal struggles for power, and trying to defend against Assyria, the dominant imperial power.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. From within and without<\/em>. The rot will eat away from inside (verse 12), and the lion will devour from outside (verse 14). And the One who is behind both of these images is God. The prophecy wants its listeners to believe that the root cause of all the crises, of every type, is the crisis in the relationship between the people and God.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Where is Judah<\/em>? This prophecy regarding the kingdom of Israel, includes a reference to Judah. Look for it. (It\u2019s in parentheses in the translation).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. They can look for me<\/em>. That\u2019s what verse 15 says: \u201cAnd I will return to My abode\u2014 Till they realize their guilt. In their distress, they will seek Me And beg for My favor.\u201d This is the purpose of the punishment and the distancing from God according to chapter 3. The distress and the yearning will do the job (at least according to Hosea).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","image":{"ID":53645,"id":53645,"title":"general-qs-points to
