How much does Hosea\u2019s wife cost? \u201cI hired her for fifteen [shekels of] silver, a <\/span>\u1e25omer<\/em> <\/span>of barley, and a <\/span>lethech<\/em> <\/span>of barley\u201d (v. 2). Is that a lot or a little? Depends on the exchange rate of the shekel, and which commentators you read.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Similarities and differences<\/em>. How is the story in this chapter of the marriage to the beloved but adulterous woman different from and similar to the story of the marriage to Gomer daughter of Diblaim in the previous chapters? Note in particular the answers to the question what will bring about a resolution of the crisis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Wins the prize for problematic symbolism<\/em>. In order to get his message across, in this chapter, Hosea, as in chapter 1, is obligated to do things that change his life. To marry a woman, have children with her, to buy a wife, and to separate from her. We have seen this sort of \u201cperforming\u201d the message in previous prophets: Isaiah went around naked and barefoot (Is. 20); Jeremiah wandered the streets of Jerusalem with a yoke around his neck (Jer. 27); and Ezekiel experienced on his person the process of destruction (Ez. 4).
