Following Hosea\u2019s prophecy about the <\/span>Petach Tikvah <\/span><\/em>\u2013<\/span><\/i> the gateway of hope (2:17) that God will open to this nation on redemption from exile, is a singularly unprecedented reimagining of humanity. God asserts that He will \u201cremove the names of the idols from their mouths (2:19).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our sages explain that God actually removed the temptation for idolatry from our very being. Rabbi Dovid Rosenfeld describes idol worship as coming from a good place: a natural drive to connect with the infinite. The challenge was not to suppress the drive but to know how to express it, and that is where the failure lied. Rather than using this drive to draw closer to God, the people succumbed to an equally powerful drive to find the path of least resistance, and \u201cGod was too demanding. Idolatry gave them a sense of connecting to something beyond this world but without the strings attached.\u201d God demanded a standard of behavior; idols demanded nothing. That God chose to rid us of the idol worshiping temptation (not the strings!) and find another path to rebuild our relationship, was nothing short of reconfiguring the human condition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some ask if this removal of temptation didn\u2019t also take with it a removal of free will. One critical objective for humanity is to choose good over evil. There are a myriad of ways to do that besides idol worship, but ultimately, making that choice involves a recognition of a higher authority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of this chapter Hosea delineates a prerequisite to completing our reformation. The land had been decimated along with the cities and Temple, and now Hosea prophecies that before the people will be able to fully express their newly recovered relationship with God, the land itself will be reconstituted. To do so requires a profound understanding of our environment and the natural processes that lead to our continued physical existence. \u201cIn that day, I will respond to the sky, And it shall respond to the earth; And the earth shall respond With new grain and wine and oil…\u201d (2:23-24).\u201d As Rashi explains, God will hear the plea of the heavens and put rain in the clouds; the heavens will, in turn, pour rain down on the land; and the land will then nurture the grain. Only then, when of our own free will we acknowledge that this seemingly natural order is God-given, will we truly connect with the infinite and be able to say, \u201cYou are my God (2:25).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
