  1. The children pay the price<\/em>. As in many stories of divorce, ignoring the advice of psychologists, the battle is fought on the backs of the children. The father recruits them to his side to rebuke the mother (v. 4), and despises them in verse 6: \u201cI will also disown her children; For they are now a harlot\u2019s brood.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. She didn\u2019t know\u2026<\/em> He gave her abundance: \u201cAnd she did not consider this: It was I who bestowed on her The new grain and wine and oil; I who lavished silver on her\u201d (v. 10). But she thought all this was a gift from her lovers. But who is to blame for this \u201cmisunderstanding\u201d? Her insensitivity, or thanklessness? Or the anonymous sort of giving, and his\/His lack of presence in her life?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. There\u2019s just nothing like the desert<\/em>. There\u2019s nothing like the desert for unplugging, and taking stock. It\u2019s a great environment for couples therapy. But there are not a few readers and commentators who wish to see in the verse not only the eradication of idolatry, but also the rejection of the oppression inherent in \u201cownership\u201d (<\/span>ba\u2019alut<\/span><\/em>) in human relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Good to know<\/em>. To \u201cknow\u201d (lada\u2019at<\/em>) in the Bible is not just to acquire knowledge. It is the search for deep understanding, for closeness, for <\/span>devekut<\/em>, intimacy and union. Now you know the depth of the new connection: \u201cAnd I will espouse you with faithfulness; Then you shall be devoted (<\/span>veyada\u2019t) to the LORD.\u201d (verse
