God states multiple times “Let no alien, uncircumcised in spirit and flesh, enter My Sanctuary—no alien whatsoever among the people of Israel” (44:9). God also punishes the Levites who sinned by forbidding them to “serve Me as priests, to come near any of My sacred offerings, the most holy things” (44:13). Forbidding the uncircumcised from entering the Temple I understand, but relegating the Levites (who, according to Rashi, repented their sins) to non-priestly duties is upsetting. Furthermore, the rest of the chapter presents a fastidious set of rules that even those allowed to perform holy service are required to follow. Priests must wear linen, not wool garments, including a linen turban and breeches. They are forbidden to shave their hair but required to trim it. Even their spouses are regulated: priests are forbidden from marrying divorcees or widows.

But perhaps the most alarming specification applies when the priests leave the sacred inner courts of the Temple and enter the outer courts where the nation can reside. The priests are commanded to remove their garments “lest they make the people consecrated by [contact with] their vestments” (44:20). What is the problem with the masses coming into contact with the smallest bit of holiness? Will the leftover sanctity on the priests’ clothing infect the “simple” people?

The explanation appears in the priestly job description a few verses later: “They shall declare to My people what is sacred (kadosh) and what is profane, and inform them what is clean and what is unclean” (44:23). In his book Sacred Fragments, Neil Gilman translates the Hebrew word for holy (kadosh) to separate. There are many restrictions placed on the Sabbath in order to distinguish it from the other days; that separation preserves the Sabbath’s sanctity. If every day is special, every day is actually mundane. Likewise, in order to maintain the Temple’s sanctity, God must limit access to the Temple’s holiest chambers and place restrictions on those allowed into the holy spaces. Without the distinction between sacred and profane, sanctified, and mundane, the holiness of the Temple cannot exist.

2019-10-30
