Here, he noted that this gate was to remain closed to human traffic to allow God to enter therein: \u201cOnly the prince (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nasi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may sit in it and eat bread before the Lord\u201d (44:2), i.e. to partake there of sacrificial offerings, as will be detailed further in Chapter 46.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing \u201cthe priestly Levites, sons of Zadok\u201d (15) who remained steadfast in their service to God while others were straying, Ezekiel stated: \u201cThey shall not marry widows or divorced women; they may marry only virgins of the stock of the House of Israel, or widows who are widows of priests\u201d (22). This runs counter to received Torah law. According to Leviticus 21:7,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ordinary priest (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kohen hedyot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is forbidden to marry \u201ca woman defiled by harlotry\u2026 or one divorced from her husband\u201d, a widow, though, is forbidden only a High Priest (Lev. 21:13-14).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In our earlier remarks on Chapter 22, we noted:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud records the following: \u201cR. Yehudah said in the name of Rav. That man, Chananiah ben Hezekiah, should be remembered favorably, for were it not for him the Book of Ezekiel would have been hidden away, because it contradicted the Torah\u201d (BT Hagigah 13a).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chananiah rescued it from oblivion by resolving the ostensible contradictions.\u00a0 A look at some of the traditional exegetes will give us a sense of those resolutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi and Eliezer of Beaugency attempted to fit Ezekiel\u2019s proscriptions into the Torah\u2019s framework by parsing the phrase \u201c[widows] of priests they may take\u201d to sanction marriage to a particular widow\u2014one whose prior marriage to another priest allowed her to partake of offerings limited to priests and their families, raising her status above an ordinary widow. Radak and Malbim, however, saw this prohibition as indicative of a greater sanctity that would have to be observed by priests in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Ezekiel\u2019s failure to mention the prohibition against marriage to \u201ca woman defiled by harlotry,\u201d Radak observed that since it was already a matter of Torah law, there was no need to reiterate
