Now, as then, he was transported in a vision from Babylonia to Jerusalem, but a close reading reveals a substantive difference in the conditions under which the respective journeys were taken. 8:1 states: “There [at home], the hand of the Lord God fell (naflah) upon me,” while 40:1 reads: “The hand of the Lord was (haytah) upon me.” The former is indicative of a forced journey, implying an adversarial relationship with God; the latter suggests more conviviality.

Another significant feature of the latter journey emerges from the structure of the story. From 40:4 though 42:20 (incorporating the physical description of the Temple and its precincts), Ezekiel’s interlocutor (“a man who shone like copper” 40:3) interjects into the prophet’s narrative only four times: In 40:45, he pointed out the priests’ chamber (lishkah); in 41:4, he identified the Holy of Holies; in 41:22, the table (shulchan); and in 42:13, the “consecrated chambers” (lishkot ha-kodesh) in which the priests were able to eat from the sacrificial offerings.

If I were to venture an explanation for these exceptional utterances, I would assume that the last named three locations were presumed to be of particular interest to Ezekiel who was, after all, a priest (1:3). As for the site of the Holy of Holies, it was sacrosanct and its identification is self-explanatory; Malbim, however, attributed yet another reason for singling it out:

In the Second Temple, they were uncertain whether the intermediate cubit belonged within [the Holy of Holies] or without. God hereby informed him that only this was the Holy of Holies while the two-cubit space occupied by the wall is not part of the Holy of Holies and belongs outside it.

The “intermediate cubit” (amah teraksin) is addressed by Mishnah Midot 4:7, which Pinchas Kehati explained as follows:

In the First Temple, a one-cubit wide wall separated the hall (‘ulam) from the Holy of Holies… However, the Second Temple was much taller than the First Temple so a wall only one cubit wide could not be erected there, so they hung a curtain (parokhet) between them as in the Tabernacle. Because they did not know whether the one cubit space belonged within or without, they hung two curtains with a one cubit space between them, reminiscent of the [earlier] wall.

2020-06-01
