Ezekiel 37, the ultimate End of Days prophecy, contains a display of resurrection, and a promise from God to Israel that they will eventually return to their land. But upon further examination of the parallels between Ezekiel\u2019s animation of the dry bones and the original Creation of Man in Genesis, I realized this prophecy represents more than a prediction about messianic times.<\/span><\/p>\n

The chapter begins famously with God speaking to Ezekiel in the valley of dry bones. God says to the bones \u201cI will cause breath (<\/span>ruach<\/span><\/em>) to enter you and you shall live again\u201d (37:5). The allusion to the original Creation of Man is hard to miss. In Genesis Chapter 2, the second description of God\u2019s formation of Man and Woman, the verse says, \u201cHe blew into his nostrils the breath of life (<\/span>nishmat chayim<\/span><\/em>), and man became a living being\u201d (Gen. 2:7). Though the Hebrew word for breath in Ezekiel literally translates to \u201cwind\u201d and the word in Genesis to \u201csoul,\u201d the process of granting life through breath is the same in both. The same is true for God\u2019s apparent involvement in both \u2018creation\u2019 stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the language describing the bones joining together in Ezekiel -\u201cbone to matching bone\u201d (37:7) –\u00a0 mirrors Man\u2019s exclamation in Genesis following the creation of Woman: \u201cthis one at last is bone of my bones\u201d (2:23). The verse in Genesis following this exclamation uses the word \u201ccling,\u201d or in Hebrew, <\/span>davak<\/span><\/em>,<\/span><\/i> to describe the bond between husband and wife. The literal meaning refers to Man cleaving to his wife so they become \u201cone flesh,\u201d (2:24) but the word <\/span>davak<\/span><\/em> lends itself to the Kabbalistic concept of <\/span>devekut<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>the highest spiritual connection one can have with God. The hint at <\/span>devekut<\/span><\/em> between husband and wife is appropriate to Ezekiel where husband and wife serve as the predominant metaphor for God and Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reference to <\/span>devekut<\/span><\/em> in a messianic context emphasizes the future relationship God hopes to have with His people (even though Ezekiel\u2019s re-Creation of Man is on a lower level than God\u2019s). Ezekiel can animate life with \u201cwind,\u201d but only God can imbue humanity with a soul. The parallels to Genesis explicate the complicated realities of resurrected beings. God values the resurrected people of messianic times just as he values humankind created in Genesis, but the resurrected are missing a divine quality: a soul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Valley of Dry Bones feels freaky and miraculous, and many commentators question its historical accuracy. But Ezekiel\u2019s skeletal construction of life foreshadows the marriage between God and Israel in messianic times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
