Because you were a staff of reed To the House of Israel: When they grasped you with the hand, you would splinter, And wound all their shoulders, And when they leaned on you, you would break, And make all their loins unsteady.” (29: 6-7)

We’ve seen this imagery before. Rabshakeh, the Assyrian general, warned Hezekiah not to rely on Egypt’s help against Assyria by warning: “You rely, of all things, on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which enters and punctures the palm of anyone who leans on it! Usually reeds are strong and flexible, but a broken reed provides no support, and will hurt the person relying on it – as happened to Israel after relying on Egypt.

The word Ezekiel uses for reed is the Hebrew kaneh.
