For this parasha Avner Moriah visualizes the blessings in four registers. How did these blessings and relate to the life experience of our biblical forefathers? What can we learn from them about the good life? Viewing these blessings through the prism of the artist’s imagination provides some answers and evoke an understanding of the nation’s hopeful future.

The picture at the top right shows verdant fields edged by trees and green mountains, overlaid with white diagonal stripes that hint at rain: “I will grant you rains in their season, so that the Earth shall yield its produce…” (Lev. 26: 4).

The second register gives expression to: “Your threshing shall overtake the vintage and your vintage shall overtake the sowing; you shall eat your fill of bread and dwell securely in your land” (Lev. 26: 5). On the right, a farmer is shown harvesting grain, after which he will gather the grapes. On the left, we see men threshing wheat. The hills and the blue skies suggest peaceful borders and tranquility.

The third register alludes to the verse: “I will grant peace in the land, and you shall lie down untroubled by anyone. I will give the land respite from vicious beasts and no sword shall cross your land” (Lev. 26: 6). The picture on the right depicts a tranquil scene, with a man resting comfortably on a hammock tied between two shady trees. To the left we see a cow grazing, clearly not having to fear an attack by wild animals.

Soldiers standing on the top of a mountain allude to the next verse, which is also visualized in the right-hand picture of the fourth register: “You shall give chase to your enemies and they shall fall before you by the sword” (Lev. 26:7). The leftmost picture shows the Israelite camp, with the cloud of God resting on top of the Tabernacle: “I will establish My abode in your midst and I will not spurn you” (Lev. 26: 11).

From various episodes described in the Bible we realize that these blessings relate to the peoples’ many real concerns: The lack of rain and the resultant famine in Canaan forced Abraham (Gen. 12:10) and later the sons of Jacob (Gen. 42:5) to seek food in Egypt. The reality of having to deal with dangerous beasts is obvious when Jacob, upon seeing Joseph’s bloody tunic, cries, “A savage beast devoured him” (Gen 37:20). The concern with war and enemies appears throughout the Bible.

Finally, the gift of God’s presence in the last image speaks of reassurance, saying, in effect, that if the people are faithful all the promises will be fulfilled: “I will ever be present in your midst; I will be your God, and you shall be My people” (Lev. 26:12).

33
