Every seventh year is to be a Sabbath (<em>shmittah<\/em>) year, during which there will be no sowing, pruning, nor reaping so that the land can rest. The fiftieth year is to be a Jubilee, requiring not only that the land rest but that all property revert to its original owners and that all Hebrew slaves be set free.<\/p>\n<p>In his painting, Avner Moriah focuses contrasting notions of slavery by dividing the picture into two parallel scenes. To the left we see three pyramids in the background, and an Egyptian overseer with a whip, watching slaves toiling in the fields. The image on the right shows people working the land, as suggested by the three light-brown mountains in the background, in the Land of Israel. In the foreground are two nearly identical bearded Israelites gazing at one another, the only difference between them being the red staff held by the man on the right, who seems to have authority over the other man.<\/p>\n<p>The picture on the right figures \u201cyour kinsman,\u201d a Hebrew who became a slave when he could not pay his debts and was forced to sell himself into slavery: \u201cIf your kinsman under you continues in straits and must give himself over to you do not subject him to the treatment of a slave. He shall remain with you only until the Jubilee year\u201d (Lev 25:39\u201340).<\/p>\n<p>From this <em>parasha<\/em> we know that he was not to be treated as the Israelite slaves were treated in Egypt. The portrayal of slavery in Egypt on the left alludes to the story told in Genesis 47: during the seven good years Joseph gathered all the food and then sold it back to the people during the seven lean years. When they had no more money, and nothing left to sell, they were forced to sell themselves to Pharaoh as his slaves.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph treated his brothers differently and did not enslave them, but when Joseph died, the new Pharaoh did enslave the Israelites under very harsh conditions. In contrast, in their own land, Israelites were not to be life-long slaves to any human master because the Torah declares that they became \u2018slaves\u2019 to God: \u201cFor they are My servants whom I freed from the land of Egypt; they may not give themselves over into servitude\u201d (Lev. 25:42).<\/p>\n<p>The narrow register above the picture on the right reflects the story of the Exodus from Egypt. We see three small pyramids with the spiral symbol of God\u2019s spirit over the middle one and the Israelites crossing the Reed Sea on their way to freedom. A long outstretched white hand \u2013 the artist\u2019s rendering of the hand of God \u2013 extends from the base of the pyramids and appears to be tenderly supporting the escaping people, visualizing the forever remembered verse: \u201cThat with a mighty hand the Lord freed you from Egypt\u201d (Lev. 13:9).<\/p>\n","image":{"ID":74676,"id":74676,"title":"32
