The parasha reviews many commandments regarding a holy life, including: to honor one’s parents; to observe the Sabbath; to love and respect one’s neighbor; not to steal or exploit the weak; to pay a worker’s wages on time; not to practice injustice in court; and not to cross-breed animals or seeds or mix fabrics, thus keeping them separate as God created them.

In his painting, Avner Moriah visualizes the commandment of the orlah (uncircum-cised) fruits, not to eat the fruit of a tree during its first three years of growth: “Plant any tree for food… Three years it shall be forbidden for you not to be eaten; in the fourth year all its fruit shall be set aside for jubilation before the Lord” (Lev. 19:23–24).

We see an Israelite on his knees holding a young sapling. He is wearing a garment with many stripes alluding, perhaps, to the manifold duties described in this text. In the background we see the yellow hills of the desert, but the man is kneeling in a white area, undefined both geographically and temporally. Although he is clearly still in the wilderness, the man is apparently about to plant the sapling, the branches perhaps alluding to its first three years of growth, thus hinting at the future: “When you enter the Land.”

Why, among all the laws detailed in this parasha, did the artist choose to illustrate the orlah fruit prohibition? How does this commandment express holiness and being like God? Why does the Torah refer to the fruit from the early years of a tree as orlah – uncircumcised?

The image of the lone man reverently holding a sapling can take us back to the story in Genesis where man was created in God’s image and He “placed him in the garden of Eden to till it and tend it” (Gen. 2:15). From the beginning, man was given freedom, but with the obligation to take care of the land and not eat from the one tree that was dedicated to God. The dedication of the orlah fruits to the Lord represents a bond with God, similar to the Brit Milah: “Circumcise the flesh of your foreskin and that shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you” (Gen. 17:11).

The artist focuses here on the holiness of man’s obligation to maintain and cherish God’s creation. Man was to take care not to exploit the land and its trees, and was to dedicate his early fruits to God. Allowing young trees to mature for three years ensured that they would yield good fruit in plenty after the fourth year: “And only in the fifth year may you use its fruit – that its yield to you may be increased” (Lev. 19:25).

30
