Ezekiel portrays the Jewish people as a woman, a metaphor that will re-appear in chapter 23, culminating with the death of Ezekiel’s own wife in chapter 24, symbolizing the city’s final destruction. He portrays Jerusalem as a harlot (verses 1-34), like her older ‘sister’ Samaria and her “younger sister” Sodom (44-58). Ezekiel spares no sensitivities – repeating derogatory terms about the woman: “poorly clad and bare” (7, 22, 39); “covering/revealing nakedness” (8, 36, 37); and her blood (6, 9, 22, 38). He describes God’s first compassion for her, born abandoned in a field, her umbilical cord uncut. When she sprouts into womanhood, God appears again, washes the blood from her body, clothes her with fine clothing and jewelry, and feeds her the most refined food: “‘I pledged myself to you and entered into a covenant with you,’ says the Lord God, ‘and you became mine’” (8).

The response for all of God’s efforts? Jerusalem begins to whore herself to others, giving away the very gifts that God had given her. “… you made your beauty an abomination; you spread your legs to every passerby” (25).

For her betrayal, Jerusalem will be delivered to her enemies – precisely those that she thought were her lovers – and will return to the pitiful state where she began: “…They will strip you of your clothing … and leave you naked and bare” (v. 39).

Despite all the sins, Ezekiel dramatically concludes that it will not lead to breaking the bond between God and His people. As he rebukes Israel, he forgives them: “That you may remember, and be put to shame … when I have forgiven you for all that you have done, says the Lord God” (16:63).

Why does Ezekiel believe that nothing will shatter the covenant? One fascinating suggestion comes from Jason Giles, who notes that Ezekiel’s language draws from the Song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32. There, God discovers the destitute Jewish people in a barren location (the only other time this imagery is used in the Bible), delivers her with care so that she flourishes; but when they prosper, they forsake God. The people are punished for their disobedience, but ultimately, God restores them to greatness. Several literary parallels link the two sections. Moses describes how God cared for the people like an eagle spreading (פרש; prsh) its wings (כנף; knp) over its young. Ezekiel portrays God entering the covenant with Jerusalem: He spreads (פרש; prsh) his garment (כנף; knp) over her.

Moses’ song states that its words would come back to testify against the people in the future: “when many evils and troubles have come upon [the people], this Song shall confront them as a witness…” (Deut 31:21). In our chapter, Ezekiel is echoing the song uttered by Moses so long before. Moses sung it to the people upon their entry into the land of Israel; Ezekiel would sing it to them as they left.

image: by Michal Ben
