\u00a0<\/span>Our chapter opens with:<\/span><\/p>\n

The word of the LORD came to me: O mortal, proclaim Jerusalem\u2019s abominations to her, and say: Thus said the Lord GOD to Jerusalem: By origin and birth you are from the land of the Canaanites\u2014your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite (1-3).<\/span><\/p>\n

And near its closing, it reiterates:<\/span><\/p>\n

Why, everyone who uses proverbs applies to you the proverb \u201clike mother, like daughter.\u201d You are the daughter of your mother, who rejected her husband and children. And you are the sister of your sisters, who rejected their husbands and children; for you are daughters of a Hittite mother and an Amorite father (44-45).<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi identified the Amorite father with Abraham and Hittite mother with Sarah: \u201cAbraham and Sarah derived their greatness from there [Amorites] and the Hittites provided her with a gravesite.\u201d Eliezer of Beaugency, however, clarified that \u201cthey [Israel] were not descended from Amorites and Hittites\u201d; rather, their actions were typical of those nations among whom their parents had dwelt\u2014as implied by \u201clike mother like daughter\u201d (44).<\/span><\/p>\n

Moshe Greenberg wrote: \u201cSince the city of Jerusalem is addressed\u2014symbolizing Israel\u2014its pagan antecedents are exploited for reprobating the people.\u201d He also cited Benjamin Mazar, onetime dean of Israeli biblical archaeologists (on whose team I served digging at the southern wall of the Temple early in 1968), who took note of a striking connection between the Hittites and the very city of Jerusalem:<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jebusites, apparently belonging to the Hittites and their satellites, migrated from the north during the first half of the twelfth century BCE, after the destruction of the Hittite empire. This is the background of Ezekiel 16:3.<\/span><\/p>\n

Greenberg, citing Gen 10:15. Judges 19:1, and 2 Samuel 5:6, concluded: \u201cBiblical ethnography connects Canaanites, Amorites and Hittites very closely, and these three to the Jebusites, the pre-Israelite inhabitants of the city.\u201d (Anchor Bible, <\/span>Ezekiel<\/span><\/i>, 274).<\/span><\/p>\n
