However, while both the parable (mashal) and its intended analogy (nimshal) are straightforward, the use of a vine as an illustration has additional significance. In Psalms 80:9, Israel is described as “a vine transplanted from Egypt” and Isaiah compared God’s painstaking care for Israel to a vintner’s tending to his vineyard, concluding: “For the House of Israel is the vineyard of the Lord of hosts” (5:7).

As Moshe Greenberg elaborated:

Comparison of the vinestock to Jerusalem (a surrogate for Judah/Israel) is a grotesque distortion of the traditional use of the vine as a figure for Israel… While this figure was used in eulogistic self-description in Israel’s prayers (“Turn… and attend to this vine!” Ps. 80:15), prophets turned it to polemical purpose… But Ezekiel’s imagination seized upon an as yet unexploited aspect of the figure. Why speak of fruit at all, when the only appropriate element of comparison was the base wood of the vine whose destiny was destruction? (Anchor Bible, Ezekiel, 268)

While the positive images belong to productive vines, our chapter, as noted, deals with a branch that had been detached from the vine and, as such, was unproductive. Moreover, as Radak pointed out: “It is inferior to other tree branches that even if they do not produce fruit, they can be put to other productive uses and made into tools or roofing for houses, while this vine cannot.” As for the singeing (or charring) at its center (4), Radak explained: “That is Jerusalem, which is in the center of the Land of Israel,” whose inhabitants had seen what happened (the charring) to the ten tribes and to the other cities of Judah (i.e., “the two ends”) and learned no lesson from it, and were now doomed to share their
