In our introduction to Ezekiel, we pointed out that traditional exegesis placed him in Babylon in approximately 592, shortly before the destruction of the Temple. In this chapter, God instructed him to carve an image of the city of Jerusalem on a brick (1), draw a picture of siege implements arrayed against it (2), and take \u201can iron plate\u201d and place it between himself and the image as \u201can omen for the House of Israel\u201d (3). Then, he was directed to spend 390 days sleeping on his left side (4-5), followed by 40 days on his right side (6), the former linked to the punishment of the House of Israel and the latter to that of the House of Judah.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is but one of several instances in Tanakh in which God instructed prophets to do strange things that turn out to be fraught with great symbolism. Jeremiah was instructed: \u201cGo buy yourself a loincloth of linen, and put it around your loins, but do not dip it into water\u201d (13:1) and then to hide it in the cleft of a rock (13:4). Later, he was told to retrieve it, and its deterioration became a symbol of the fate Israel would suffer. Isaiah was told to go about \u201cnaked and barefoot\u201d (20:3); Hosea was instructed to marry a harlot (1:2); and Ezekiel, as we just saw, was directed to eat a scroll (3:1). Maimonides (Guide 2:46) regarded all such incidents as occurring only in prophetic visions, following the paradigm of Abraham and the covenant of the pieces (Gen. 15), which is explicitly designated a vision (<\/span>mar\u2019eh<\/span><\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n

Apropos of the depiction of Jerusalem under siege, there is an interesting difference of opinion amongst the exegetes regarding their precise identification. The verse (2) mentions <\/span>dayyeq, solelah, machanot<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>karim<\/span><\/i>. Apart from <\/span>machanot<\/span><\/i>, camps, which is a common biblical word, here is how their definitions are distributed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
