In the Myth of Er , the\u00a0 legend that concludes <\/span>Plato<\/span>‘s <\/span>Republic<\/span>, the story includes an interpretation of the cosmos and the afterlife that prominently influenced religious, philosophical, and scientific thought for many centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The narration opens as a man named Er dies in battle. When the bodies of those who died in the battle are collected, ten days after his death, Er remains undecomposed. Two days later he revives on his funeral-pyre and tells others of his journey in the <\/span>afterlife<\/span>,<\/span> including an account of <\/span>reincarnation<\/span> and the <\/span>celestial spheres<\/span> of the <\/span>astral plane<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Er discovers he is not the only soul that transcends earthly life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With many other souls as his companions, Er had come across an awe-inspiring place with four openings \u2013 two into and out of the sky and two into and out of the ground. Judges sat between these openings and ordered the souls which path to follow: the good were guided into the path into the sky, the immoral were directed below. But when Er approached the judges, he was told to remain, listening and observing in order to report his experience to humankind.<\/span><\/p>\n

The tale includes the idea that moral people are rewarded and immoral people punished after death. According to Plato\u2019s chronicle <\/span>the soul must be immortal, and cannot be destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of chronology, we find similarities stated by the Greek philosopher\u2019s text and our Prophet:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I came to the exile community that dwelt in Tel Abib by the Chebar Canal, and I remained where they dwelt. And for seven days I sat there stunned among them. After those seven days, the word of the LORD came to me:\u201c O mortal, I appoint you watchman for the House of Israel; and when you hear a word from My mouth, you must warn them for Me. If I say to a wicked man, \u2018You shall die,\u2019 and you do not warn him\u2014you do not speak to warn the wicked man of his wicked course in order to save his life\u2014he, the wicked man, shall die for his iniquity, but I will require a reckoning for his blood from you. But if you do warn the wicked man, and he does not turn back from his wickedness and his wicked course, he shall die for his iniquity, but you will have saved your own life. Again, if a righteous man abandons his righteousness and does wrong, when I put a stumbling block before him, he shall die. He shall die for his sins; the righteous deeds that he did shall not be remembered; but because you did not warn him, I will require a reckoning for his blood from you.If, however, you warn the righteous man not to sin, and he, the righteous, does not sin, he shall live because he took warning, and you will have saved your own life.\u201d(Ezek 3:15-21)<\/span><\/p>\n
