\u201cA time to build and a time to destroy,\u201d says Ecclesiastes. The author does not tell that one action is good and the other is bad. Rather, he tells us that everything has its time. What I find difficult in what Ecclesiastes says, is how do we know when time is right!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes, when I eat a meal, especially one that I have prepared myself, I think about the unavoidable truth that every act of eating is also an act of destruction. However, I counter that thought by realizing that this \u201ctime for destruction\u201d is a good type of destruction like pruning a fruit tree before spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

In chapter 2:8-10, God presents Ezekiel with a \u201cscroll of lamentations, dirges and woes\u201d and tells him to eat it. However, God\u2019s repeated requests to Ezekiel to eat the scroll in Chapter 3:1 and the fact that God ultimately feeds it to Ezekiel (3:2), signals to the readers that Ezekiel wasn\u2019t too excited to fulfill this request. Once Ezekiel finally \u201cfed his stomach and filled his belly with the scroll\u201d (3:3), he realized that it was actually \u201cas sweet as honey\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ezekiel is a unique prophet. His purpose is not to try and stop the destruction of Jerusalem but instead, to convince the people that are already in exile in Babylon that \u201cit wasn’t for nothing that God did all that he did\u201d (14:23). For Ezekiel to fulfil this role, he had to be convinced that this was in fact true. God needed Ezekiel to believe with every cell of his body that yes, Jerusalem will be destroyed and yes, the people of Jerusalem will be killed and exiled, but NO, this is not solely an act of destruction but actually an act of destruction for the sake of rebuilding.<\/span><\/p>\n

God wanted Ezekiel to understand this message not only abstractly but also experientially, to embody it, literally. The legendary educator Parker Palmer says that \u201cyou teach who you are,\u201d and if it is also true that \u201cyou are what you eat,\u201d then the logical conclusion is that \u201cyou teach what you eat.\u201d Ezekiel had to embody the lesson that destruction can also lead to something good. He had to eat and destroy the scroll of lamentations, dirges and woes and realize that it was actually as sweet as honey.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now he can teach the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":73127,"id":73127,"title":"ez3-destroy
