Once again, Ezekiel is drawn up into the heavenly realm, and once again, he has a vision of the angels and heavenly beings that attend God. But this time, his experience of heaven is more about the auditory sensations than the visual. On his last trip to Heaven, in Chapter 1, Ezekiel described what the angels and Heavenly hosts looked like. This time, Ezekiel is overwhelmed by the great roaring sounds of the angels\u2019 praise and the beating of their wings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Midrash in Tanhuma asks why Ezekiel would hear these loud sounds of the angels’ wings beating as they sing God\u2019s praises. Why do the angels need to make such a racket as they attend to God?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the Midrash, the angels beat their wings to create this great roaring sound when we, humans, do not engage in praising God. The rabbis of the Midrash teach that when Moses received the Torah from God on Mount Sinai, he heard the angels\u2019 refrain and brought it down to Earth, teaching the Israelites to whisper \u201cBaruch Shem Kavod Malchuto l\u2019Olam Va\u2019Ed\u201d, \u201cBlessed is God\u2019s Holy Name forever\u201d. When the Israelites would say this line, the angels\u2019 wings would droop quietly, as if handing us the microphone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The line Moses supposedly learned from the Angels is traditionally recited by Jews after the Shema, and on Yom Kippur. At those times, the Midrash imagines, Heaven falls silent for us. The Midrash doesn\u2019t fully explain why the angels would cease their work at our words of praise. Perhaps it is so God can hear our whispered words of prayer. Or perhaps is it like being part of a carefully conducted orchestra, where each section complements the other to create a harmonious piece of music. Or perhaps there is a different reason altogether.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However you imagine it, the Midrash believes in the power of our unified voices, engaging in dialogue with God and the angels. This intimate experience of Heaven is not just for Ezekiel and the other prophets. Any time we reach out to God with our voices, the angels and God are with us.
