History has reached a new low. For the first time, the Jews feel no need to apologize for their actions. The women are prompting their families to burn incense to the gods of Egypt, while their husbands support their actions with theological justifications and accuse Jeremiah of speaking without substance. If, on their way to Egypt, they accused him of lying, now they simply inform him that they will not listen to him. Their decision is the result of the rational conclusion reached after years of trial and error. We have practiced what you preached, they tell Jeremiah, and it did us no good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah repeats his previous prophecy, adding nothing. His words are similar to Moses’ oath when he stood before Pharaoh after nine of the ten plagues. Pharaoh threatened that Moses would never again see his face. Moses repeated these words in agreement: “Indeed as you have spoken, I will never see your face again” (Ex. 10:29). Similarly, Jeremiah turns the people’s own words back on them: You say you will never again invoke the name of God \u2014 indeed you will not, for you will all be slaughtered or exiled to Babylonia, and there will be no one left to invoke God’s name.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah concludes his prophecy with a sign: \u201cLet this be your sign \u2014 declares the Lord \u2014 that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that My words will be fulfilled against you for evil\u201d (44:29).<\/span><\/p>\n

These seem to be Jeremiah’s last words. It is the only time he uses a sign, and this perhaps encapsulates his entire prophetic career. Never, not even in his final prophecy, does his audience believe him. The Torah describes the prophet who uses signs to try to convince the people to serve other gods:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and gives to you a sign or demonstration. And the sign or wonder that he told you of comes true, and he says: Let us follow other gods, which you have not known, and let us worship them \u2014 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, for the Lord, your God, is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and soul\u201d (Deut. 13:2-4).<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeremiah knows his words will not be heeded. The only thing left to do is to anchor them in a sign that will prove that everything he has said is from God. With this dreadful statement, he exits the prophetic stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
