They could not accuse him of outright falsification because they had acknowledged his veracity by summoning him. Instead, they accused him of \u201cspinning\u201d his message to concur with the political views of Baruch ben Neriah. They then forced all the remnant\u2014including Jeremiah\u2014to accompany them, as they made their way to Tahpanhes, which Shadal* identified as Tophna Pelusiaca, on Egypt\u2019s easternmost border.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, God gave Jeremiah the following instructions: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get yourself large stones and embed them in mortar (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the brick structure (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malben<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) at the entrance to Pharaoh\u2019s palace in Tahpanhes, with some Judeans looking on\u201d (9). The precise meanings of the words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malben<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the subject of some exegetical disagreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi saw the root of the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as L-U-T and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mem<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a prefix and translated it with the Old French <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">envelopement<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u05d0\u05e0\u05d5\u05d5\u05dc\u05d5\u05e4\u05de\u05e0\u05d8), i.e., \u201cwrap it in the clay of the bricks.\u201d His student Yosef Kara used the same Old French and translated <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malben<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mortar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Radak said that \u201cL-U-T is the material from which bricks are made, or some other substance such as plaster or sand, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malben<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where the bricks are fired or manufactured.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shadal questioned whether a furnace for firing bricks would be situated alongside a royal palace, and offered, instead, an interpretation he credited to his student, Yitzhak Pardo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malben<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a stockpile of bricks and of other things that are required for construction. Such a stockpile was situated next to Pharaoh\u2019s palace, or it was placed there [temporarily] to strengthen the wall and the palace out of fear of the Babylonians. That stockpile also contained a lot of mortar for all the construction and that is where Jeremiah deposited the stones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*For an explanation of our
