He has seen uprooting and tearing down, obliteration and destruction. But suddenly, he is filled with hope that the final part will now be fulfilled as well: “If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you; for I have relented from the disaster I have inflicted on you.”

But Jeremiah hears the people saying, “We cannot stay here.” They have no real intention of heeding the word of God. Their oath of ten days earlier was meaningless. Egypt sits on the Nile in peace and prosperity and beckons them. Upon this they pin their hopes and dreams. They perceive themselves not as refugees fleeing for their lives, but as immigrants. Jeremiah’s prayer on their behalf was thus based on a fundamental error. He flies into a rage against them and holds nothing back. He vents his frustration, his disappointment, his sense of betrayal at their request for the word of God, and his willingness to believe that, finally, the people wanted to connect with the word of God. So begins one of Jeremiah’s longest speeches, from verses 15 to 22. Everything finally bursts out — bitterness, humiliation, anger, and despair. The leaders of the flock behave wisely. They do not interrupt the prophet as he pours out his heart.

Only afterward do they respond to Jeremiah’s boiling rage with chilling coolness: “You lie; the Lord, our God, has not sent you.” The word “lie,” sheker, hits Jeremiah like a knockout punch. The decision to continue on to Egypt has been made.
