Jeremiah was asked by the leaders of the survivors to petition God about what their next steps should be. He informed them that God\u2019s instructions were to remain in the Land of Israel and suffer Babylonian sovereignty. In fact, if they were to go to Egypt as they had intended, they would be greeted there with the very distress and destruction they were seeking to avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shadal* noticed that the pronominal suffixes used in referenced to God changed from speaker to speaker. The people first refer to Him as Jeremiah\u2019s God while he refers to Him as their God, and, indeed, at the end they, too, acknowledge Him as their God.<\/span><\/p>\n

[They said to Jeremiah] Let the LORD your God tell us where we should go and what we should do. The prophet Jeremiah answered them, \u201cAgreed: I will pray to the LORD your God as you request…\u201d Thereupon they said to Jeremiah\u2026 \u201cWe swear that we will do exactly as the LORD your God instructs us through you – Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey the LORD our God to whom we send you, in order that it may go well with us when we obey the LORD our God.\u201d (3-6)<\/span><\/p>\n

Shadal\u2019s explanation (on v.6) for the changes is as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

They [later] said \u201cour God\u201d in the sense of obeying Him. Otherwise it would appear that they did not accept His lordship. However, when they said to Jeremiah \u201cyour God,\u201d their intention was that you are His servant and that was out of respect, as when Saul said to Samuel \u201cto sacrifice to the Lord your God\u201d (1 Samuel 15:15) and \u201cto bow before the Lord your God\u201d (30), and many others.<\/span><\/p>\n
