At the start of this chapter Ishmael ben Netanya, \u201ca descendant of the royal family\u201d (v.1), who likely thought that the leadership of the Judean remnant should have been bestowed upon him, assassinated Gedaliah. He acted with marked cruelty, slaying all of the Judeans who had gathered at Mizpah\u2014including Babylonian soldiers who had been posted there (3), managing somehow to keep the massacre so secret that additional Judahites arriving there on the morrow on their way to Jerusalem fell into his hands and were themselves slain. The upshot of these events was that the survivors, fearful of Babylonian retaliation, decide to flee to Egypt. As we will see in the following chapter, Jeremiah ended up accompanying them.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of these details provides some interesting grist for the exegetical mills. V. 5 describes the Jews who fell into Ishmael\u2019s trap as follows: \u201cEighty men came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, their beards shaved, their garments torn, and their bodies gashed, carrying meal offerings and frankincense to present at the House of the LORD.\u201d Since we have noted that the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem and destruction of the Temple already occurred, where were these eighty people going?<\/span><\/p>\n

Rashi explained that they had left home while the Temple still stood, learned of its destruction on their way, and, hence, shaved their beards and tore their garments in mourning. Radak found that explanation wanting. Since the Temple was destroyed in the month of Ab, Gedaliah\u2019s assassination was in Tishrei (we still observe it by fasting on the day following Rosh Hashanah), and they were coming from Shiloh and Shechem, which are only a day\u2019s journey from Jerusalem, how could they not have known about the destruction? His solution: They had surely heard of the capture of the city; however, the news that the impoverished of the land had been left in place gave them the false impression that the Temple, too, had been spared.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shadal* cited the commentary of Abrabanel who had an alternate resolution: They were planning on making the offerings on the site of the Temple, relying on a legal principle that synagogues\u2014exemplary of holy places\u2014retain their sanctity even after their ruin.<\/span><\/p>\n
