Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled upon it and the Presence of the Lord filled the Tabernacle\u201d (Exod. 40:33\u201334).<\/p>\n<p>Now the people could sense the Presence of the Lord as they had during the Revelation at Mount Sinai: \u201cWhen Moses had ascended the mountain the cloud covered the mountain. The Presence of the Lord abode on Mount Sinai and the cloud hid it for six days\u201d (Exod. 24:15\u201316).<\/p>\n<p>In both episodes the cloud is very dense: Moses cannot approach the Presence on the mountain nor can he enter the Tent of Meeting. Why does this last chapter in Exodus so closely parallel the description of the theophany? What is the role of the cloud in the Israelites\u2019 daily life? What is the significance of Moses being unable to enter the Tent of Meeting?<\/p>\n<p>In Avner Moriah\u2019s painting for <em>Parashat<\/em> <em>Pikudei<\/em>, we see the tents of the Israelites, reminiscent in style of the unique rounded structures in the paintings of the fifteenth-century Italian Piero Della Francesca. The Tabernacle symbolizes God\u2019s sanctity, a holiness defined and reflected in limits and boundaries: the area of the courtyard, suggested by its curtains and pillars; the area of the Holy, represented by the purple wall; and the area of the Holy of Holies marked by the gold on top of the wall and the silhouettes of the cherubim sketched behind it. A large white cloud on top of the Tabernacle is seen against a background of blue mountains, a reminder of Mount Sinai. The cloud is seen against an unnatural green-gold sky that projects both mystery and spirituality, its imminent rising alluding to the divinely inspired sign for the people to continue their journey.<\/p>\n<p>The similarities between the Bible\u2019s descriptions of the Revelation on Mount Sinai and the completion of the Tabernacle suggest that the Tabernacle is, in effect, an extension of the theophany, which will accompany the Israelites in perpetuity. The completion of the Sanctuary is also associated with the completion of Creation, the Sanctuary a reflection of the universe, suggesting God\u2019s encompassing presence.<\/p>\n<p>The cloud is a visible manifestation of the Lord\u2019s grandeur. The Israelites must learn to respect and appreciate the sanctity in this symbol of God\u2019s Presence. That Moses is not able to enter the Sanctuary when it is filled with God\u2019s splendor is an important teaching regarding the necessary reverence and awe when God resides among the people.<\/p>\n<p>The Book of Exodus ends with a visible sign of God\u2019s Presence dwelling among the people of Israel.
