The Chaldeans take a long time to build their siege ramp, while the people of Jerusalem desperately search for a way out. The prophet keeps urging anyone who will listen: “Give yourselves up to the Babylonians!” Despite his preferential treatment in the prison yard, he continues to agitate, trying the patience of local leaders, who wish to keep up morale:

Finally, the officials say it explicitly — Jeremiah does not seek the welfare of his people! He seeks only their ruin and should be put to death! These officials have been waiting a long time for permission to kill the prophet. This aging prophet simply does not let up. One person mentioned here is Gedaliah son of Pashhur — almost certainly the same Pashhur who placed Jeremiah in the stocks decades earlier. His son, one of the highest officials in the city, has inherited his father’s distaste for the man who cursed his family. The king, never a strong figure, feebly grants Gedaliah and his cronies their wish, and without further ado, they take action:

The Judean officials do just what Joseph’s brothers did — why dirty your hands with killing when you can fling your victim into a pit? Most probably, they choose to kill him this way because Jeremiah is no longer an unknown figure. As Babylonia advances on Jerusalem, many recall his warnings and begin to believe him. Therefore, he cannot be openly executed. By lowering him into the mud, his executioners can easily cover their tracks. In a backhanded way, the text draws attention to the empty wells of Jerusalem by confirming that this pit is empty of water, containing only mud. The well is not in use, so no one, the officials think, will ever discover how they eliminated the traitorous prophet. However, they fail to notice Ebed-melech the Cushite (a servant of the king, of Ethiopian origins), who serves his masters but, like all good servants, remains invisible to them.

This servant of a different color and class notices Jeremiah’s plight and takes great pains to rescue him from the depths of the pit.
