Moses, descending from Mount Sinai, “…hurled the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the foot of the mountain” (Exod. 32:19). The Israelites are standing at the foot of Mount Sinai as during the Revelation. The Golden Calf is ‘ablaze’ and the mountain is raging at the sight of idolatry. In breaking the tablets Moses is, in effect, tearing up the contract. The Israelites have failed to live up to their side so the contract is void. The vivid colors standing out against a stormy sky reflect Moses’ turbulent emotions.

How are we to understand the Israelites’ demand for an idol after they had witnessed God’s miracles and especially the great Revelation? How does the very large figure of Moses suggest the different stages in the story? How does Avner Moriah’s portrayal answer some of the many questions about this episode?

The blue figure of Moses portrayed against the fiery red mountain takes us back to his initial ascent up Mount Sinai during the theophany. Upon seeing the fire and the smoke the Israelites pleaded with Moses saying: “you speak to us and we will obey, but let not God speak to us, lest we die” (Exod. 20:16). In agreeing to act as a mediator, Moses created a total dependence on himself by the people. Thus, when he disappeared for forty days and nights the Israelites, who no longer had any visible representative of God, demanded that Aaron make them a new divine leader (Exod.32:1). Aaron acceded to their wishes and caused a Golden Calf to be built, which the people looked to as their new mediator.

Focusing again on the large blue image of Moses and on the tablets lying on the ground we move to the second time we are told about Moses on the mountain; this time descending with the two stone tablets. Moses had seen God’s anger as He called the Israelites “a stiff-necked people” (Exod. 32:9). When God said that He would create a new nation from his descendants in place of the sinning Israelites, Moses “implored the Lord his God, saying ‘Let not Your anger O Lord blast forth against Your people” (Exod. 32:11). But, then, coming down from the mountain and seeing the Golden Calf and the terrible scene of idolatry Moses was overwrought. Convinced that the Israelites were indeed unworthy, he shattered the tablets, believing that breaking them and thus the covenant was in keeping with God’s will.

Moses ordered the Levites to put those among the people who had sinned most grievously to death, and then he relented: “The next day Moses said to the people, you have been guilty of a great sin. Yet I will now go up to the Lord; perhaps I may win forgiveness for your sin” (Exod. 32:30).

He was again ready to ascend and to mediate between God and the people.

21 Ki
